SUMMARY:May campaign call - the economic effects of the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Go to https://bit.ly/covidactionmaycc to register! \nA new report by global economics consultancy Cambridge Econometrics reveals that Long Covid could have wider economic ramifications for the UK causing a drag on economic growth and added pressure on the NHS if no long-term healthcare funding commitments are made. \nFunded by direct giving fund Balvi\, and in partnership with Professor Emeritus in Public Health Ruairidh Milne from the University of Southampton\, the report used available evidence on the cost of Long Covid treatment\, economic inactivity among those living with the condition\, and prevalence in the UK population to consider the long-term macroeconomic impacts on wider UK society by 2030. \nBased on the assumption that there are no long-term healthcare funding commitments to manage Long Covid\, the results estimate that Long Covid is likely to reduce GDP by around £1.5bn and 138\,000 jobs each year. Were prevalence to increase to 4 million people per year by 2030\, the negative impacts would increase to a reduction of around £2.7bn in GDP and 311\,000 job losses each year. \n\nChris Thoung\, Director of Society at Cambridge Econometrics comments\, \n\nUsing our in-house macroeconomic model E3ME\, our analysis suggests Long Covid may represent a further source of chronic pressure on an already strained NHS and a drag on economic growth. There are long-term costs to the UK economy and the NHS. No firm policy position on Long Covid is as much a decision as policy action. \n\n\nWomen and low-income households are expected to bear the brunt of the employment impacts both as\ngroups experiencing higher prevalence of Long Covid and as groups more likely to be working in sectors\naffected by the macroeconomic effects. \n\nProfessor Milne comments\, \n\nLong Covid is a major public health challenge and I welcome one of the first macroeconomic impact assessments on Long Covid in the UK. This report clearly demonstrates why policy makers must take Long Covid seriously in terms of prevention\, research and healthcare. Doing so will help not only those living with the condition and their families\, but it will also reduce the economic burden of groups that are already experiencing the pressures of a cost-of-living crisis and an NHS under huge strain with extensive waiting lists. \n\n\n\nACCESS THE FULL REPORT HERE.\n\n

SUMMARY:Banner Protest Against Withdrawal Of Masks In Health And Social Care
DESCRIPTION:When and where?\nSaturday\, 20th May\, 3.30 pm\, outside the Scottish Parliament (meet between the artificial ponds and the Visitors’ entrance) \nWhat will we be doing and what should you bring?\nThis is an authorised protest with banners and placards\, and an opportunity for anyone wishing to speak to do so. Bring yourself\, any friends and\, if you have the time for it\, a placard with your own message to the Scottish government. \nWhy?\nThe Scottish Government has written to all healthcare and social care providers to advise them that\, from 16th May:\nCare home staff should no longer be allowed to wear a mask if they choose to (unless they get a personal clinical risk assessment\, which very few will be able to get). To our knowledge\, this makes Scotland the first country to actually ban the use of masks in any setting!\nMasks are no longer recommended and will no longer be supplied to staff healthcare settings (except where they would have been used pre-Covid or based on a personal clinical risk assessment). \nThis decision infringes on employees right to protect their own health and wellbeing within the workplace. It puts the health and welfare of both staff and patients at increased risk from Covid and other airborne viruses.\nIn Scotland COVID-19 is still killing around 50 people each week (around 600 in the UK). It has resulted in nearly 2 million people (3%) of the UK population now living with Long COVID. A figure which is sadly likely to increase as according to the World Health Organisation\, one in ten infections lead to Long COVID or other post-COVID conditions.

SUMMARY:Zero Covid Scotland: Covid - Prevention is possible
DESCRIPTION:Since summer 2021\, there has hardly been a week when the number of Covid-19 infections across the UK dropped below 1 million. With new variants spreading all the time\, people are getting infected again and again\, and the number of people suffering from Long Covid and organ damage keeps rising. To end the cycle of illness\, we need sustainable ways of preventing infections. \nJoin us via Zoom this Saturday\, 11th March at 2pm\, to listen to two excellent speakers\, followed by discussion: \n\nProf Stephen Reicher\, St Andrews University and member of Independent Sage: Professor Reicher has also been involved in the Behavioural Science advice to the UK and Scottish Governments and now part of the Scottish Pandemic Preparedness Committee. He will be speaking in a personal capacity.\nLara Wong\, founder of Clinically Vulnerable Families\, a support and advocacy group.

SUMMARY:Hazards Campaign: Covid Workers Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:The Hazards Campaign Covid-19 Workers Inquiry will provide a wider remit than the narrow one that the official public inquiry has taken to give grass root organisations\, workers\, trade union reps and officers and other occupational health and safety activists the opportunity to register their concerns and challenges about the impact of the pandemic and provide a living record of the issues workers have faced in the UK. It will be an opportunity to hold employers\, enforcers and Govt to account and to share good practice.
